Google already manage to produce three Nexus android smartphone, one with HTC and two more with Samsung. When it comes to tablet, there is no actual android tablet that build by the company’s own engineering team. However, we might able to count on Motorola Xoom since it is the first tablet PC in the world that running on Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It is the first android platform that optimized for tablet PC. No wonder why Google was expect huge numbers of sales from this tablet. It is said that the giant search company hope that there will 10 million units of Xoom sold in 2011. Further more, they are also expect 10 millions more in 2012.
Thanks to our guys at The Verge, we manage to figure it out that Google target was to sell 10 millions Android PC tablet between 2011 and 2012. The company also shows it’s high confident by set the target to capture 33 percent market share of the whole tablet industry. These numbers are presented by none other than Andy Rubin himself. The senior Vice President of Google was announce all of these targets when he presented the prototype unit of Motorola Xoom.
However, it turns out that Google’s target is too optimistic. We both know that android tablets are still don’t have the power to take on Apple’s iPad. This is quite interesting. Especially if you consider the fact that there are plenty of android based tablet with various size, hardware, and purpose flooded the market right now. It seems like manufacturers are finding it hard to sell their own product.
Google was using the estimation from Morgan Stanley in 2010, which predicted that the whole market for tablet PC will consist of 48 million tablets by the end of 2012. However, even though Google manage to achieve that 10 million targets, they won’t capture 33 percent of market share.
We are currently on April now. Latest report shows that Apple is already sold 67 million iPads around the world. If Google is indeed manage to sell 20 million android tablets, they will only have around 20 percent market share by now. The giant search company is also hope that those 20 million tablets will bring them with $110 million revenue in 2011 and $220 million in 2012. Both of us know that the company has failed to achieve those targets.
But the good thing is that Google is ready to try new strategy this year. The company is reported to create an online store to start direct selling of tablet PC. They’re already did it by offering affordable version of Galaxy Nexus at Google Play store. In addition, Google also already teamed-up with Asus to build the world’s first Nexus tablet. This device is predicted to give serious thread to Kindle Fire since Google aims to sell if for less than $200. However, latest report suggest that it will miss the presence of Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU.
