If you already installed the new BlackBerry OS 2 beta and root your BlackBerry PlayBook, then you might want to install Android Market apps to it. Although the new OS update let you to run Android apps on PlayBook, but the selection is limited to the apps that is already verified by RIM.Installing android market means that you can utilize your PlayBook as a regular android tablet. The apps selection range will be wider.
Today, we come out with detailed instruction to install Android Market on BlackBerry Playbook. These steps is quite simple, but please read each of them carefully to avoid unexpected results.
First, you have to download and install WinSCP and PuTTY gen. Before you move on to the next step, we would like to inform you that all of these tutorial is tested on a Windows PC. If you’re fine with that then let’s move on to our first step.
1. Navigate to CyanogenMod website and download the latest version of Google Apps package.
2. Extract the .zip file and leave it there. Just remember where you put it, we’ll need that later.
3. Download the android launcher app. The file is currently packaged as .bar file and you can find it on PlayBook Bars. When you’re done, install it using the DDpb Installer.
4. Look into your PlayBook and tap the Android Player. You can find it on the bottom side of your current homescreen.
5. Initiate PuTTY Gen. Click the load button and browse for your Dingleberry folder. Don’t forget to change the file type to “all files” and double click the rsa file to select it.
6. Select “OK” if you see some notification. Continue with clicking the “save private key” button. Rename the default file name to something that you’ll remember, ex: playbook.psk. When you’re done, simply press the “save” button.
7. Plug in your BlackBerry Playbook to your desktop computer. Use the WinSCP to do this. Don’t forget to write your PlayBook’s IP address as the host name and simply type “root” for the username. Look for private key file, you should see the … button under it. Click it and browse for the PuTTY file that you already save on the previous step.
8. WinSCP explorer window will appear. Your PlayBook is displayed on the left side and the desktop computer on the right side. Now, on the right side, browse for the location where you extract the file from CyanogenMod website.
9. When you’re done, copy the META-INF and system folder to the root folder of your PlayBook.
10. Look closer on the right window, navigate to system/app and delete the SetupWizard.apk file. Now, you must look for an icon with up arrow and click it.
11. Now, navigate to /apps/sys.android.XXXX.ns/native/scripts [enter]. XXXX is represent series of unique identification number and it is different for each PlayBook unit.
12. Look on the top side of WinSCP interface, you should see a small black box with HOM writings on it. If you already find it, just simply press the button and a command prompt should appera.
13. Enter the following command and finish it with enter. This one will end all of current Android player on your PlayBook.
./android-player-cmd.sh kill-android-core.sh
14. Remember step 3? now you need to launch the android launcher app.
15. Navigate through all of the apps listing and search for Android Market. If you’re doing it successfully, you’ll be able to log-on into your Google account.
